The Confused
EPISODE 1
Looking out through the window into the dark, she could see the stars giving light to the dark world, the few houses who had their bulbs on gave more light to the environment. Apart from the chirping sound of the crickets. She could hear little to nothing from the outside world but the noise within was killing her. An earthquake was going on within her. Her mind was giving her the toughest challenge she could ever think of. A battle that seemed endless was going on within her. Questions and thoughts were popping up and she was trying to defend herself from each one. Hiurrrrrrruuuuu wiuuuuuwuuu, she could hear around her ears, obviously coming from mosquitoes. She shook her head and waved her left hand around her left ear, in a bid to drive the mosquitoes away. Her attention was once again shifted to the window. Then the next thought came up.
“Tessy you should have time for your children, you leave this children every morning and only force them awake at night to eat because they always sleep before you come back”.
Who then would provide food for the children and I? She defended herself.
Its Johnson’s fault! If only he can go out like other men and provide for us I shouldn’t be going through all these.
Johnson is just wicked, that is the issue. Since when has it become my duty to provide for my children. He does chores, yes but why can’t he also go out there and hustle like other men? What chores am I even talking about? The one he does as if he is granting me a favour? Every evening he goes to Razz man’s bar, sits and look for who would give him free drink and he would argue about politics for hours as if they are paying him salary for being the best in the argument. Men who go out to hustle for their families enter their homes before he does. She said to herself.
Then she remembered her mother. “Marry Ben so that I would not die hungry my child. Your father died when I was still pregnant for you and I had to raise you and your siblings single handed. Your only brother travelled to Europe 6 years ago and we have not heard from him till now, I don’t know if he is still alive now or if he is dead. Your only sister is married to a village teacher who can barely feed himself let alone feeding her. Now that Ben has asked for your hand in marriage, grab this opportunity so that we can have a better life.” She remembered all her mother did to make her marry Ben but she never loved him. So she couldn’t marry him.
And who told my mother that Ben’s wife is the happiest woman on earth now? She defended. Ben is a beast when offended. He has anger disorder and he also feels that money can buy everything. I am also not a very patient person. So Ben and I would really break our heads some day if put together in the same house.
She moved her gaze from the street to the floor of her one room bedroom to kill mosquitoes feasting on her children’s body. As she tapped Anita’s body crushing the tiny creature enjoying its life. Anita sprang up to her feet asking what the matter was. She knew Anita would wake up at the slightest touch. She had taken after her. She smiled as she got up and said “like mother like daughter” go back to sleep my baby, I only killed the mosquito feasting on you. My baby, why is it that you don’t like using the mosquito net I got for you people? You know these your brothers are very careless about things like that, your twin sister who always does that is very sick. So why is it that you won’t make effort to see that you put the net before sleeping?
Anita: mummy I don’t like using that net. You know I sweat a lot and I always feel like am in hell whenever I use it. I prefer mosquito bites to net.
Tessy: Anny baby, mosquitoes cause malaria. It’s better you use mosquito net than for you to fall sick.
Anita: mummy, why don’t you get fan for us?
Tessy: Anny, there is no light here. We cannot use fan without electricity.
Anita: Then pay the electricity bill mummy. Daddy said we don’t have light because we haven’t paid the bill. Stella and Jumoke our neighbors have light. Why is ours different?
Tessy: Anny baby, this is midnight. Everyone else is asleep. Let’s not wake your daddy and siblings up. We would talk about this some other time, okay?
Anita: mummy you are rarely around. So when am I going to see you to talk about it?
Tessy: Anny, please go to bed. We would talk about this later.
Anita: But mum……
Tessy: no Anita! Go to bed! Its late, you would soon get up to go to school.
Anita: alright mummy. What about you? Don’t you want to sleep?
Tessy: Anita, I will sleep as soon as you do. Please go to bed.
Anita: alright mummy.
(She hugs her daughter dearly and Anny bends down to lie down).

EPISODE 2
She looked at her daughter as she lied down peacefully. Huhhhh, she let out a sigh of relief! “Thank God this girl has gone to bed, I have never met any child as inquisitive as she is. She asks questions as if her life depends on it. Even her eyes ask questions. At every moment her eyes and brain are always looking for answers. Thank God she is very brilliant as well. At least I don’t bother about her school fees anymore since she won the state government competition for primary school for the year 2017. At least she has saved me that stress of bothering about her school fees.” She said to herself.
Then her mind went back to the last time her sister in-law visited. They had a serious quarrel. She had arrived in the afternoon and waited till she came back by 9:05pm. Drenched by the rain, she stepped into her room and met her husband’s elder sister sitting at the edge of the bed. As soon as she stepped in, her sister-in-law greeted before she could recognise her face from the diming light from the candle.
Rita: good evening madam Tessy
Tessy: good evening my husband. Haa, you visited. Welcome ma. How is your family? Ah! you must have really spent some time waiting for me. Let me quickly change. This rain has dealt with me.
She didn’t get any reply from her sister-in-law.
“Good evening mum” her daughter greeted her as she dropped her bag by the edge of the wall.
“Good evening my baby” she replied. You are still awake. She turns around and saw that she was drawing. What are you drawing?
Anora: mummy am drawing a beautiful gown.
Tessy: wow, that’s my baby girl. Ride on baby, let me quickly change.
As she went ahead to remove her wet clothes, she pondered on what her sister-in-law came with this time around with her face as mean as someone ready for war. She had always been coming to make demeaning comments about her and she has never retaliated but with the level of frustration she has been facing recently, she just knew she may not be able to keep quiet anymore. Then, covering her nakedness with a piece of wrapper she got from the old Ghana-must-go bag under the iron bed they had. She got a towel from the top rail of the door and used it to dry her dripping hair. Then she looked around for her children. Collins her first child, Daniel her second child and Anita one of her twin daughters were already fast asleep. Only one of the twins, Anora was awake drawing, while their aunt sat down and waited for her. Their father was nowhere in sight as usual.
Then she made to sit down beside Rita. As soon as she landed her buttocks on the bed, Anita woke up from the mat they laid on, on the floor.
Anita: good evening mummy
Tessy: my angel, how are you?
Anita: am fine mummy.
Tessy: am sorry I woke you up. The food is not yet ready.
Anita: its alright mummy, we would discuss as we cook. I really miss you mummy.
Tessy: I miss you too my baby.
Anita: mummy, aunt Riri has been waiting for you since afternoon.
Tessy: I am here now. I was just about talking with her before you woke up.
Anita: okay mummy.
She turns to her sister-in-law.
Tessy: am sorry for that, Sister Rita. You are welcome. Let me quickly get a bottle of malt for you from mama Funmi at the shop opposite the house.
Rita: no need for that. I didn’t come here to exchange pleasantries or drink malt.
Tessy: oh, I’m sorry ma. Forgive me if you find that offensive.
Rita: just check your time Tessy. Is this the right time a reasonable mother is supposed to be coming back home?
Sensing trouble, she didn’t reply as she never liked giving her children negative signs about herself or thier father. She quickly excused herself and brought out the yam she just got back with from her bag and She was so weak that she only wanted to cook it as white yam, to be eaten with red oil. Then she put the yam on fire on the stove at the corridor which doubled as the passageway to the small room she shared with her family and her kitchen. Then she called on her neighbour Funke who was a student at the state university which is close by.
Tessy: Oremi! Oremi!!!
Funke: Oremi, e kaale o (good evening)
Tessy: şe daadaa lo wa? (how are you)
Funke: daada ni mo wa ma. (am fine ma)
Tessy: please I want my twins to come to your room just for a few minutes. I have to discuss something with someone, I wouldn’t want them there.
Funke: ok ma. No problem! Bring them.
Tessy: a dupe (thank you)
She goes into the room and tells the girls to go over to aunt Funke’s room that she would send for them as soon as she is through with aunt Riri.
The girls were happy. They like aunt Funke. She teaches them new songs and buys gifts for them from time to time. As the girls were about to leave. Anita asked: mummy are we going to sleep there?
Tessy: no baby, I will soon call you back
Nora: Anny lets go. Aunt Funke has light. We would watch TV there.
Anita and Nora: alright mummy, see you later.
They both left.
As soon as they left, she turned to her sister-in-law.
Tessy: Aunt Rita, back to what you asked. I totally hate the fact that I come back very late at night but there is nothing I can do about it now. Am helpless. This job am doing is our only means of survival in this house. If I leave it now, these children and I will go hungry.
Rita: Tessy just listen to the rubbish you are saying. What do you want me to understand here? That you leave your house by 5:30am and come back at midnight. Is that what you call a job? I came here by 3:40pm. These children were back from school and would have been alone since then if not for my presence. Your husband came in around 5pm, gave them biscuit and left. Tessy who is training these children?
Tessy: aunt Rita, when I was teaching, I was being paid #15,000 by the school despite having NCE. I was coming back early enough but my children were practically starving. Looking malnourished. I came to you many times for assistance but you told me you were only a house wife and didn’t have money. You advised me to look for a better job.
Rita: and this is the nonsense job you found?
Tessy: yes, this is the one I found. Do you have any to give to me?
Rita: you have not said what you are looking for. So this night job is the only job in the whole Nigeria.
Tessy: point of correction ma, I am not doing a night job. I work in a bank. If you don’t like it, then tell your brother to go and look for a job or better still, give him one.
Rita: oh, now I see what your problem is. So because he is out of job for now, you decided to start prostitution.
Tessy: I beg your pardon ma’am, don’t ever repeat what you said now, in your life. I have taken enough of your insults and from now onwards, I will not take it anymore. What nonsense? Who do you think you are? Of course I don’t blame you. Your husband is responsible. You have cars at your feet. Servants here and there. He gives you whatever you want. So you think you are very free to say whatever you want to anybody and nothing would happen. Ma’am, you may be older than me but you are in my house. If you didn’t come here to talk calmly, go to your house and make noise. Don’t do that here.
Rita: which house are you talking of? This rat hole? And how dare you ask me out? I can see that your mother didn’t train you well. You don’t have respect. I have told you…….
Tessy: enough! enough!! enough!!! Madam, I agree with you. I wasn’t properly trained. My mum is a failure in training children. Your own mother is an expert in training baby men. Men who neglect their duties and do not feel remorseful. Men who keep their certificates at the bottom of a box and wait for well paying jobs to locate them. Men who sell off the only property their father left for them and wasted the money in gambling. Men who sit at bars drinking, gambling and arguing about politics. Men who are experts in speaking grammar but refuse jobs because the pay is too small for them. She only knows how to train men who don’t think about their future or about their children.
Rita: Tessy are you talking about our late mum in that manner?
Tessy: am sorry ma’am, I haven’t finished. Your mum is a saint who didn’t teach her children how to be responsible or work hard. She is an expert in raising lazy children. Your mum has just 2 children: you and your brother and both of you are jobless!
Rita: (burst into tears) I have always known you are a devil. I will come back for you.
She stormed out furiously.
Tessy: bye bye ma. Greet your husband and children for me. She smiles sarcastically.
She sighed loudly as soon as Rita left, she knew she would either have war or peace for a long time because she had never answered her back.
So this time around, she would respect herself and stay away from her or come back for war and she has made up her mind to give her whatever she wanted.
She was lost in thought when her alarm beeped. She came back to reality. It was already 4:00am and she had not slept at all. She had been up all night thinking of her future with her children. As soon as the alarm beeped, Anita got up.
Anita: good morning mummy.
Tessy: good morning my baby, I hope you slept well.
Anita: yes mummy. Are you leaving already?
Tessy: no baby, I just want to start cooking your breakfast and lunch. Be gentle so you don’t wake your siblings up too early. Join me lets cook. We would wake them up when we are done with the cooking.
